Welsh Marches

Welsh Marches, based in the historic counties of Montgomeryshire, Brecknockshire and Radnorshire (now Powys), have some of the oldest trees and rocks in Wales – creating Mediterranean-type conditions in Wales. This has allowed some exceptionally rare species to flourish on these flanks.

The project, a partnership between Natur am Byth! and Plantlife, covers fifteen of these rare target species, all threatened or near extinction in Wales, including lichens, saproxylic invertebrates, fungi, and bryophytes. Notable species are the Circumspect Dotted Lichen, Scarce Cardinal Beetle, Oak Polypore, and Dog Screw-moss. These species face threats from habitat loss, ash dieback, lack of ancient trees, and ammonia pollution.

Welsh Marches project aims to highlight these "mini wonders," improve community wellbeing through nature events, foster a connection to nature, provide volunteer opportunities, and undertake conservation actions. It seeks collaborative solutions to protect these species and inspire new guardians for future generations.
